Elementary Art (K-5)

Grading & Behavior Expectations for Art:

Students will receive three separate grades each rotation. The first is an engagement grade and the other two are for the project. There is a craftsmanship grade and an execution of the project grade.

Engagement & Participation in Art:

Participation is more than attendance—it reflects a student’s presence, effort, focus, and willingness to grow.

Students are assessed on:

  • Active involvement and engagement in activities

  • Effort, perseverance, and responsiveness to feedback

  • Collaboration and positive participation with peers

  • Respect for materials, spaces, and expectations

Grades reflect demonstrated participation and growth:

  • Students who consistently meet expectations demonstrate proficiency (94/100).

  • Students who exceed expectations have opportunities to demonstrate deeper engagement, AA Character, leadership, initiative, and growth.

Participation is not based on talent or performance level. Every student can demonstrate growth through effort, creativity, collaboration, discipline, and confidence.

Execution of Project Grade:

The student will be graded on the execution of the project and application of the concepts. This portion of the grading involves following directions and meeting expectations of the project as discussed in class throughout the project. Part of the directions include understanding and applying the concepts taught during the project. This includes specifically the Elements of art and Principles of design.

Craftsmanship Grade:

Craftsmanship is graded based on the use of materials. This includes saturation versus scribbling, neat lines, clean edges, and removal of extra pencil lines or smudges. This also includes proper use of scissors, glue, paint, clay, or any other materials we may use for the project.

  • Below a 94 (or “–” in K/1) = Your child is still developing this skill and working toward mastery.
